Case study · AI visibility

    Your rankings held.
    Your traffic didn't.

One reason is that the answer now appears above the results — and the page you rank with is often not the page the answer quotes.

Measured on both surfaces at once for an enterprise deep-tech company selling AI simulation software into pharma, defense, and financial services. Search performance from their own Google Search Console; AI citations from independent measurement of what AI answers actually quote.

    72,333

    Impressions · never quoted

Their strongest page in search. AI has not quoted it once.

    17

    Clicks · quoted verbatim

One of their weakest pages. AI lifts its opening line almost intact.

    0

    Marketing pages quoted

On their most competitive subject, AI quotes the documentation instead.

    4

    Questions, one page

Four ways of asking the same thing, all answered by a single explainer.

    The evidence

Same site. Same topic area. Opposite results.

Four pages from one company, measured on both surfaces in the same window. Search performance predicted almost nothing about whether AI would quote them.

The last row is the one that surprises people. For their most competitive technical subject, AI answers do not quote the marketing pages built for it. They quote the product documentation — written for existing customers, never optimised for search, and absent from the content team's reporting entirely.

    What actually gets quoted

Three patterns. None of them are ranking factors.

    01

    Pages that resolve confusion

When two terms are commonly mixed up, the page that settles it gets quoted — often in the answer's first sentence.

    02

    One page, many phrasings

Four different ways of asking the same question resolved to a single explainer. In search those are four keywords to fight for separately.

    03

    Documentation beats marketing

On genuinely technical questions, AI reaches for the reference material — glossaries, definitions, docs — over the page written to persuade.

The shape of a sentence AI quotes

"If you searched [the term people type], you're almost certainly looking for [the term that's actually correct]."

Lifted almost intact into a live AI answer. It works because it answers the question in the first line, names both terms, and resolves the ambiguity before explaining anything. The page it came from is one of the weakest on the site by every search metric.

    Why it matters

If you only watch rankings, you're watching half the board.

Buyers increasingly get their first answer from an AI summary rather than a list of links. A page can hold position one and be entirely absent from that summary — so your best-performing content may be doing nothing at the moment a buyer forms a first impression.

The reverse is more actionable. Pages that look like failures in a rankings report can be doing significant work in AI answers. Cut them because the search numbers are weak, and you delete the thing AI was quoting — with no report anywhere to tell you what happened. You can't manage what you're not measuring, and most reporting still measures one surface.

    Reading the numbers

What these figures do and don't say.

    Stated plainly

    • This is a measurement, not a causal claim. AI-citation data is available only at the whole-domain level, and this company ran significant press and partnership activity in the same window. Nothing here credits the content programme with causing a change in AI visibility, and no such claim is made.
    • The divergence needs no attribution. Whether a specific page is quoted is a direct observation, not an inference — which is why that is the finding we publish.
    • Search figures are first-party, from the client's own Google Search Console, filtered to the published pages and date range — not from an estimating tool.
    • AI citation figures come from independent measurement of what AI answers quote, cross-checked across two separate providers that agree on the pages named here.

Most companies have never checked. The answer is rarely what their rankings report implies.

We measure both surfaces together — what you rank for, and what AI actually quotes — against your own verified data. You'll see the same comparison shown here, about your own site.
